When God Sends Someone to Help You Grow

Sometimes, God’s answer to a prayer comes through a person: someone who guides us, tells us the truth, or helps us recognize the responsibility God has placed before us.

Not every blessing arrives as money, an opportunity, or an open door. Sometimes, it comes through someone who believes in us, guides us, corrects us, or reminds us of the purpose God has placed in our lives.

Scripture gives us memorable examples of people who helped others hear, grow, or step into a moment of responsibility. Their stories remind us that God works through human relationships—while He remains the source of our calling and help.

Elijah calls Elisha — 1 Kings 19:19–21.

Elijah and Elisha: an invitation to grow

Elijah’s call found Elisha at work. Elisha left his former life and followed the prophet, entering a season of learning and preparation. Later, when Elijah’s ministry was ending, Elisha asked for a double portion of his spirit. ( 1 Kings 19:19–21; 2 Kings 2:9–15 )

The story points to the value of faithful mentorship: someone can open a door to growth, but the learner must also be willing to follow, serve and prepare.

Eli and Samuel: helping someone listen

When young Samuel did not yet understand who was calling him, Eli recognized what was happening and showed him how to respond: “Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth.” ( 1 Samuel 3:8–10 )

Eli did not speak for Samuel. He helped him become attentive to God’s voice. At times, the most meaningful guidance we can offer is to help another person listen, discern and take their next faithful step.

Mordecai and Esther: courage for a moment of purpose

Mordecai cared for Esther as his own daughter. Later, when her position placed her near a moment of national crisis, he challenged her to consider that she might have come to the kingdom “for such a time as this.” ( Esther 2:7; 4:13–16 )

His words did not remove the risk or make Esther’s decision for her. They helped her see the responsibility and possibility before her. Good encouragement can strengthen someone’s courage without taking away their agency.

May the Lord connect you with people who strengthen your faith and sharpen your character.

Be discerning about the people who shape you

Different generations. Different circumstances. One powerful lesson: God can use people to help us grow into our calling.

Your encourager may not be famous, wealthy or influential. It could be a parent who keeps praying, a teacher who sees your potential, a pastor who guides you, a friend who tells you the truth, or a mentor who challenges you to become better.

Not everyone who enters our lives will make things easier. Some relationships bring wise correction, accountability and growth. We should receive such counsel with humility while testing advice against Scripture, godly wisdom and the fruit it produces. No person replaces God or should control the direction of another’s life.

“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.” — Proverbs 27:17 (KJV)

Become the encouragement you hope to receive

Pray for people who will strengthen your faith, sharpen your character and encourage you to walk faithfully. Ask God for wisdom to recognize sincere relationships, humility to receive correction, and courage to follow His leading.

Then ask another question: How can I become that kind of person for someone else?

While you are asking God to send someone to lift you, He may be preparing you to lift another person—with a listening ear, honest encouragement, prayer, wise guidance or a timely reminder of hope.

A prayer for the people God places in our lives

Lord, thank You for the people You use to guide, encourage and strengthen us. Give us discernment to recognize wise counsel and humility to receive it. Help us become faithful friends and mentors—people who point others toward Your truth, not toward ourselves. Show us whom we can encourage this week, and give us the courage to act with love. Amen.

Put faith into action

Think of someone who has helped you grow, believed in you, or encouraged your faith. Send them a message today and say, “Thank you for being part of my journey.” Then intentionally encourage, mentor, or pray for someone who needs your support.

Be the blessing you’re praying to receive. If this reflection encouraged you, share it with someone who may need the reminder.

Peace and purpose,
