Crazy Rich Asians (2018): Love beyond wealth and status

Sir Next · September 29, 2026 · Film review · 9/10

Sir Next NextREVIEW artcard for Crazy Rich Asians, featuring Rachel and Nick, with a 9 out of 10 rating

Can love survive when money, family, status, and tradition all have a vote?

I finally watched Crazy Rich Asians. Yes, it is glamorous: the mansions, wedding, fashion, Singapore, old money—everything looks extravagant. But surprisingly, iyon pala ang hindi pinaka-tumatak sa akin.

I teared up during Nick’s proposal to Rachel on the plane. Bakit ako na-touch nang ganito? 😅 Maybe because beneath all the spectacle, that moment was simply about being chosen. Not for the right family, surname, or social status, but because someone decides: “I choose you.”

The story

Rachel Chu, an economics professor, travels with her boyfriend Nick Young to Singapore for his best friend’s wedding. She discovers that his family is extraordinarily wealthy, then faces tradition, social expectations, jealousy, and Nick’s formidable mother Eleanor.

The cast

Directed by Jon M. Chu, based on Kevin Kwan’s novel.

What the reviews say

The film was praised for its cast, visual spectacle, humor, and representation while telling a universal story about love, family, identity, and belonging. Read the Rotten Tomatoes reviews. That critics’ approval measure is distinct from my personal 9/10 rating.

Eight years later: where is Part 2?

A movie sequel based on Kevin Kwan’s China Rich Girlfriend entered development after the 2018 film. As of September 2026, there is no confirmed release date for Crazy Rich Asians 2. Reports have also said that the film sequel remains in development; the television project should not be treated as a confirmed replacement. TVLine’s project report.

A Crazy Rich Asians series is in development for Max/HBO. Film co-writer Adele Lim is returning as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, with director Jon M. Chu and author Kevin Kwan executive-producing. The series draws on Kwan’s trilogy: Crazy Rich Asians, China Rich Girlfriend, and Rich People Problems. Series announcement and book details.

Chu said the many characters and relationships need more storytelling room than a movie provides. Read his comments to Entertainment Weekly. Henry Golding said Lim met with him and Gemma Chan about their characters. Chris Pang, who played Colin, said in June 2026 that the plan is to continue with familiar characters and that the team hoped to film in 2027. That is not a confirmed production schedule. Read the cast interviews. In July, Chan said she had no major update yet, but remained hopeful. Read Chan’s update.

So for now: no confirmed movie release date; a series in development; original creatives involved; cast conversations reported; and 2027 filming expressed as a hope. After watching tonight, yes, I would watch it. 😂 Especially because I want to know more about Astrid and Charlie.

What I took from it

1. Men should build wealth—but know why.

As a man, I believe in building financial capacity: work, build, invest, create opportunities, and become capable of providing for the people God may entrust to you. Financial instability can create real problems for marriage and family. Wealth should expand our ability to love and serve. It should never become the reason someone loves us. You want a woman who sees your character even if the mansion, inheritance, influence, and status disappear.

2. The right woman understands your principles.

Rachel could have been impressed by Nick’s world. Instead, she showed that her dignity was not for sale. Someday, if a man succeeds, a hard question may be: Does she love me, or what comes with me? Money can attract people. Character reveals who stays.

3. Love means having the courage to choose.

Nick’s feelings had to become a decision despite family expectations. The proposal on the plane moved me because he wasn’t merely offering a ring. He was telling Rachel she was his choice. Maybe most of us want that kind of certainty from someone. 🥹

4. Don’t lose yourself qualifying for someone else’s world.

Rachel doesn’t spend the whole film begging for approval. She knows who she is. That mahjong scene with Eleanor is, for me, the film’s true power scene. Sometimes strength means knowing your worth and being willing to walk away.

5. Wealth cannot repair broken relationships.

Astrid’s story delivers a quiet lesson. You can have beauty, privilege, status, designer clothes, and unimaginable money yet feel lonely in a relationship. Money can upgrade a lifestyle. It cannot manufacture loyalty, respect, or love.

From a Christian POV

The Bible warns us about the place money takes in our hearts; it does not call money itself evil. Wealth can provide for families, fund ministries, create employment, help communities, and make generosity possible. But some things are worth more.

“House and wealth are inherited from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the Lord.”

— Proverbs 19:14 (ESV)

Read the verse in context.

A man can work to build resources. Finding a woman of wisdom, character, faithfulness, and principle is a different kind of wealth. And the same goes for men: don’t just become financially attractive; become the kind of man whose character is worth choosing.

The Sir Next take

Yes, as men, let’s build wealth because there is dignity in becoming responsible, capable, and prepared to provide. At the same time, pray for what money cannot purchase: a woman who loves the man and understands his principles, respects his purpose, walks beside him while he builds, and still recognizes him if everything material disappears.

Becoming rich is one achievement. Being loved without needing wealth to earn that love? That is another blessing altogether.

NextREVIEW verdict: 9/10

Watch it for the glamour and romance. Stay for the deeper conversation about family, identity, money, dignity, and choosing the person you love.

And apparently… prepare yourself for that airplane proposal. ✈️💍🥹

Would you rather build wealth before finding love—or find someone willing to build it with you?
