5 Digital Marketing Skills AI Won’t Make Irrelevant

By Sir Next · · 3 min read

AI can produce more marketing material in less time. My view is that this makes a marketer’s ability to set direction, understand people, and evaluate results even more valuable. These five skills are worth strengthening as tools change—not a promise that any role will remain unchanged.

1. Strategic thinking

Before creating content, define the business problem. Who needs to act, what should they do, and why would the offer matter to them? A well-written caption cannot repair unclear positioning.

Use AI to generate possible approaches, then decide what deserves investment. For a local service business, the immediate problem might be weak inquiry-to-booking conversion rather than insufficient reach. Those problems call for different campaigns and different measures of success.

2. Understanding people

Analytics can show behavior, while direct conversations can help explain the reasons behind it. Listen to what customers worry about, what they misunderstand, and what gives them confidence to buy.

For a Filipino audience, consider language, local context, family influences, convenience, and trust without assuming everyone behaves alike. Ask AI to organize research themes, but validate them with real people. An invented customer persona is a hypothesis, not customer evidence.

3. Creative direction

Generating options is becoming easier. Deciding which option communicates the right idea still requires a brief and a point of view.

Set the message, audience, emotional tone, visual priorities, and desired response before requesting variations. When reviewing outputs, ask whether someone will understand the offer and remember the brand. A beautiful execution can still be confusing, generic, or disconnected from the business objective.

4. Storytelling and brand building

A brand earns recognition through repeated, coherent choices. Stories help audiences understand its purpose, but those stories should connect to the experience customers actually receive.

Use AI to explore structures or adapt a story for different channels. Keep the real details, evidence, and voice intact. Do not create fictional customer testimonials or unsupported success stories to make the narrative more persuasive. Credibility accumulates through consistency.

5. Judgment and decision-making

Marketers must weigh evidence, uncertainty, customer impact, and business consequences. AI can offer recommendations; someone still needs to decide whether the assumptions are sound and the action is appropriate.

Before approving a campaign, check the claim, audience fit, likely interpretation, and measurement plan. If a result looks unusually strong, inspect the underlying data before increasing spend. Accountability includes recognizing when the available information is insufficient.
