Welcome to the inaugural Philippines Edition of AI NewsWatch™ by Sir Next—our dedicated watch on how artificial intelligence is being developed, adopted and applied across the country.

Hindi lang natin babantayan kung ano ang nangyayari sa Silicon Valley or around the world. We will also follow what is happening here at home—from government and LGUs to big businesses, MSMEs, startups, banking, academe, healthcare, agriculture and Filipino innovation across NCR, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

For our first edition, here are five Philippine AI developments worth knowing.

Top Story | Google opens one year of premium AI access to Filipino college students

Google is offering eligible college and university students in the Philippines one year of Google AI Plus at no cost.

The plan includes higher Gemini usage limits, Gemini Omni, Study Notebooks, interactive visualizations, Gemini Live and 400 GB of cloud storage. Eligible students outside the U.S. can redeem Google’s offer until December 31, 2026, subject to eligibility and verification requirements.

Why it matters

Malaking opportunity ito for Filipino students—but access to powerful AI should come with equally strong AI literacy.

Hindi sapat na marunong lang gumamit ng AI. Students must also learn how to verify information, think critically, protect their data, understand academic integrity and use AI as a tool for learning—not as a substitute for thinking.

The next generation of Filipino professionals will increasingly enter workplaces where working with AI is part of the job.

Banking & Fintech | Maya puts AI + National ID to work at scale

Philippine fintech Maya says it is combining National ID eVerify, AI and automation to make digital financial onboarding faster and simpler.

This isn’t merely an AI experiment. Maya says agentic AI is already being used within defined controls in its KYC processes to validate information, identify possible duplicate accounts, perform required checks and route exceptions for human review.

The company reports that overall turnaround time for consumer onboarding has improved by 84%.

Why it matters

Ito ang klase ng Philippine AI story na dapat nating bantayan: AI moving from pilot to actual operations—with measurable results.

When AI is integrated with national digital infrastructure, it can potentially make financial services more efficient and accessible.

But habang lumalaki ang scale, equally important ang privacy, cybersecurity, accountability, human oversight and consumer protection.

MSME Watch | DOST-Caraga pushes nationwide AI adoption for MSMEs

Here’s an important development coming from Mindanao.

DOST-Caraga has partnered with Limitless Lab, the Philippine implementing partner of the ASEAN Foundation’s AI for MSME Advancement program, to strengthen AI literacy and adoption among Filipino micro, small and medium enterprises.

The partnership, signed in Butuan City on August 26, aims to develop certified trainers who can help MSMEs integrate AI into their businesses.

Why it matters

AI transformation cannot belong only to large corporations.

Kung matutulungan ang MSMEs na gamitin ang AI for productivity, customer understanding, operations and better decision-making, the technology becomes much more relevant to the Philippine economy.

And I particularly like what this story represents:

The push isn’t coming only from Metro Manila. It’s coming from Caraga.

AI opportunity should reach businesses wherever they are.

Filipino Innovation | Butuan students build AI-powered school emergency platform

Students from the Philippine Science High School–Caraga Region Campus developed Ligtas Skewela, a school emergency-management platform designed to help account for students during emergencies.

The project won first place among nine finalists in the Student Category of a startup technology pitching competition held in Butuan City during the Regional Science, Technology and Innovation Week.

Why it matters

Ito ang gusto nating makita more often:

Filipinos not only consuming AI—but building solutions with technology.

Even more encouraging, this innovation comes from young Filipinos in Mindanao tackling a real community problem: school safety.

Innovation doesn’t have to begin in a multinational laboratory.

Sometimes it starts with students asking:

“May problema dito. Can technology help us solve it?”

Government & Policy | The Philippines builds its national AI foundation

Behind individual AI projects is a much bigger national challenge:

Can the Philippines build the infrastructure, talent, data systems and institutions necessary to compete in an AI-driven economy?

Earlier this year, DOST launched the National Artificial Intelligence Center for Research and Innovation (NAICRI) as the country’s central institutional anchor for AI research, advanced computing and innovation. DOST says it is intended to address gaps including fragmented infrastructure, limited data availability and weak pathways from research to deployment.

The Philippines and European Union are also exploring deeper cooperation in AI infrastructure, research, governance, talent and industry development. DOST says a €10-million AI top-up initiative under the EU-PH Digital Economy Package is set to support future technology, research and investment initiatives.

The same discussions identified challenges we shouldn’t ignore: limited advanced computing capacity, uneven regional access, fragmented government data and the need for deeper specialized AI talent.

Why it matters

Ito ang bigger picture.

AI leadership isn’t built by downloading more apps.

A competitive Philippine AI ecosystem needs compute + data + talent + research + investment + governance + commercialization + regional access.

And if this transformation is truly national, those opportunities cannot remain concentrated in Metro Manila.

Sir Next Takeaway

What interests me most about these five stories is not simply that “the Philippines is using AI.”

It’s where AI is beginning to show up.

Sa classroom. Sa banking. Sa MSMEs. Sa student innovation. Sa national infrastructure.

And importantly, we’re already seeing developments beyond NCR—from Laguna to Butuan and Caraga, alongside nationwide initiatives.

But here’s something I believe we should remember:

Access is not adoption. Adoption is not transformation. And announcing an AI project is not the same as creating impact.

That’s why in every Philippine AI story, AI NewsWatch™ by Sir Next will continue asking:

Because our goal shouldn’t simply be to catch up with the world’s AI race.

The bigger opportunity is to build and use AI that solves Filipino problems, strengthens Filipino businesses, develops Filipino talent and creates opportunities across Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

AI is not just a global story.

It’s a Philippine opportunity—if we choose to use it wisely.
