AI Literacy Goes Beyond Writing Prompts

Sir Next · 12 September 2026

Knowing how to ask an AI tool a question is a start. Knowing how to judge its answer is a deeper skill.

The framework

UNESCO’s 2024 AI competency framework for students identifies 12 competencies across four areas: a human-centred mindset, AI ethics, techniques and applications, and system design. Learning progresses through understanding, applying, and creating.

The framework offers a reference for education. It is not a Philippine school mandate or proof that a particular course meets local requirements.

What this means for learning

Sir Next’s perspective: an effective AI session should give learners practice in making judgments. A polished response can still contain a weak assumption, an unsupported claim, or a conclusion that does not fit the question.

Try a simple classroom or workplace exercise. Give learners a short source passage and ask them to evaluate an AI-generated summary against it. Which details are accurate? What was omitted? Did the summary introduce anything the source never said?

The discussion matters as much as the output. Ask each learner to explain the changes they would make and why. That turns the activity into an exercise in reading, reasoning, and responsibility.

A practical lesson structure

Begin with the human goal: what should the learner understand or be able to do? Introduce AI only where it supports that goal. Then ask learners to compare, question, and revise the result before presenting their own conclusion.

For professionals, the same approach can apply to a campaign brief or research note. Identify the evidence, test the reasoning, and explain the decision in your own words. Do not make a convincing-looking answer the only measure of success.

These teaching suggestions are my interpretation of the framework’s broader emphasis on responsible learning. They are examples to adapt to the group’s experience and needs.
